BTS V’s Favorite: How to Make 'Jjapaguri' (Ram-don) in 10 Minutes with U.S. Grocery Store Ingredients

Jjapaguri is a fusion noodle dish that combines Chapagetti (chajang ramen) and Neoguri (spicy seafood ramen). It offers a perfect "sweet and salty" flavor profile with a kick of spicy umami. Today, I am sharing the secret to making "V-style Jjapaguri" at home in just 10 minutes, using ingredients you can easily find at your local Walmart or Costco!

Why is Jjapaguri so popular?

For many in the U.S., the savory, dark sauce of Chajang is a unique and delicious culinary experience. Jjapaguri is more than just instant noodles; it is an accessible way to enjoy a unique part of Korean food culture. Since it is well-known as a favorite midnight snack of BTS’s V, it’s also a fun way for fans to connect with their favorite idol’s lifestyle.

Shopping Tips: Finding Ingredients in the U.S.

Don’t worry if you don’t live near a dedicated Asian supermarket. You can easily stock up at major retailers:

  • The Noodles: Check the "International Food" aisle at Walmart. Nongshim’s Chapagetti and Neoguri are now staples at most large Walmart locations. If you can’t find them in-store, they are readily available in bulk packs on Amazon.

  • Protein Upgrade: To recreate the "Hanwoo Jjapaguri" seen in Parasite, visit the meat section at Costco. Pick up their "Thinly Sliced Beef." A quick sear of this beef to top your noodles elevates the dish to a gourmet level.

  • Side Dishes: To balance the richness of the noodles, pick up some "Mini Cucumbers" or "Pickled Radish" from Walmart. The fresh crunch perfectly cuts through the savory sauce, making the meal feel more balanced.

[Recipe] V-Style Jjapaguri (10-Minute Hack)

Ingredients (Serves 1):

  • 1 package of Chapagetti

  • 1 package of Neoguri

  • 1,000ml (about 4 cups) of water

  • Optional: Sliced beef or a fried egg for topping

Instructions:

  1. Boil the Noodles: Bring 1,000ml of water to a boil in a pot. Add both the Chapagetti and Neoguri noodles, along with their dried vegetable flakes.

A medium-sized stainless steel pot is centered on a gas stovetop burner, with a blue flame visible. The pot contains vigorously boiling water and two blocks of instant noodles (likely Chapagetti and Neoguri) with their dried vegetable flakes floating on top. To the left, on a wooden kitchen counter, are the empty packaging for Chapagetti and Neoguri, along with a torn-open packet of dried vegetable flakes. Steam rises from the pot. The background shows a out-of-focus kitchen window and counter area.

  2. Drain the Water: When the noodles are about 80% cooked, drain most of the water, leaving about 150ml in the pot. Pro-tip: Never discard all the water; that liquid is key to mixing the sauce!

person wearing oven mitts holds a stainless steel pot over a kitchen sink, carefully pouring out excess water while cooked, loosened instant noodles and vegetable flakes remain inside with a small amount of liquid. On the wooden counter to the left, unopened and opened packages of Chapagetti and Neoguri noodles along with dried flakes packets are visible.

  3. Add the Sauce: Add the full packet of Chapagetti soup base, but only use about 1/2 of the Neoguri soup base at first. The Neoguri base is quite spicy and salty, so adjust it to your personal heat preference.

person's hands pouring powdered seasonings from two packets (Chapagetti soup base and half of a Neoguri soup base) into a stainless steel pot of cooked, drained noodles resting over a kitchen sink. On the wooden counter to the left, noodle packages and dried vegetable flakes are visible.

  4. Stir and Sauté: Turn the heat to medium and stir-fry the noodles for 1–2 minutes until the sauce coats every strand beautifully. Add more noodle water if it gets too dry.

person using a pair of metal chopsticks to toss and stir the noodles coated in dark sauce inside a stainless steel pot on a gas stove. The pot rests over an active blue flame on the burner. On the wooden counter to the left, Chapagetti and Neoguri noodle packages, a small measuring cup with water, and opened seasoning packets are arranged.

  5. Finish: Transfer to a bowl, top with your seared beef or a sunny-side-up egg, and serve immediately!
